Being abroad on holiday doesn’t mean you can’t have free phone or video calls while abroad. You can use one of the following apps on your smart device or mobile phone (if your device is connected by Wi-Fi or mobile data, this becomes a free phone or video call effectively)
Make sure you and the person you wish to contact both uses the same app. You can also add a desktop version of the app to your home or office computer or personal laptop, and you will synchronise all the files and messages.
If you have trouble connecting to a favourite website from abroad (for example, I like ebuyer.com, but this computer website is blocked in Thailand), then load a VPN before trying to access the site (or bank)
A VPN (virtual private network) such as NordVPN tricks the website into believing you are located somewhere different from your actual location. For example, Ebuyer.com is located in the UK, and if I set the VPN to appear as though I am in the UK, I can access their website.
Other tips if you are going abroad for more than a short period:
- Either leave your home phone with a trusted friend (so they can give you any access codes required while you are away), for example, to make payments via internet banking or better still.
- Obtain a phone number in your residing country and add that phone number to bank accounts etc., before you leave your home country; you can still receive access codes abroad on your foreign phone.
- You will probably want to obtain TV program access while you are abroad. A VPN can be helpful for this.
